Gelati was founded by King David IV in 1106 near Kutaisi and developed as both a monastery and a centre of learning. Its academy, stone architecture, twelfth-century mosaic and later wall paintings reflect medieval Georgia’s artistic life. Conservation remains an active concern; check current visiting arrangements before planning time inside the churches.
