Tmogvi’s fortified settlement appears in records from the tenth century and controlled routes entering Georgia from Asia Minor. The fortress occupies a large rock formation. Earthquakes in 1089, 1283 and 1319 caused severe damage, followed by repeated rebuilding. Its surviving ruins record the changing fortunes of this strategic settlement.
