Zedazeni stands on the Saguramo ridge and is associated with Ioane, leader of the Assyrian Fathers, who founded the monastery in the sixth century. Its principal building is the eighth-century three-aisled basilica of John the Baptist. A bell tower, enclosure and later fortress remains show how monastic and defensive functions overlapped.
